University of Michigan
Ann Arbor, Michigan, United States
James B. Froehlich, MD, MPH, MSVM, Director of Vascular Medicine and Professor of Internal Medicine, University of Michigan. Dr. Froehlich received his undergraduate degree in political philosophy from Dartmouth College, and his medical degree from Dartmouth Medical School. He completed a residency and chief residency in internal medicine at the New England Deaconess Hospital, Harvard Medical School, under Dr. Robert Moellering.
Dr. Froehlich came to the University of Michigan as a fellow in cardiology in 1993, and during his fellowship was also a trainee under an NIH Vascular Medicine Training Program Grant in 1994, held by Dr. James Stanley. With this beginning, and the encouragement of Dr. Elizabeth Nabel, Dr. Froehlich began a career focused on the emerging field of vascular medicine. Upon finishing his fellowship in 1996, he became the first vascular medicine faculty member at the University of Michigan, with a joint appointment in vascular surgery. He joined the Society for Vascular Medicine after completing his training and rose to become President of the society in its 25th year.
He is Director of Anticoagulation Services, and director of MCORRP, (Michigan Clinical Outcomes Research and Reporting Program). Dr. Kim Eagle, the founding director of MCORRP, named Dr. Froehlich director in 2007. Under Dr. Froehlich’s leadership, the MCORRP team has grown from 4 to 18 researchers, providing database mangement, study design, and statistical support for many studies. Several of MCORRP’s studies are the largest in their fields, including the North American Fibromuscular Disease Registry (FMD), sponsored by the Fibromuscular Disease Society of America, the International Registry of Acute Aortic Dissection, (IRAD), and the Cardiac Sarcoidosis Registry (CSR). Dr. Froehlich and colleague Dr. Geoff Barnes founded the Michigan Anticoagulation Quality Improvement Initiative (MAQI2), an observational registry and quality improvement initiative. Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan sponsors this project.
