Alec Schmaier is a cardiologist, vascular medicine specialist, and physician-scientist at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Harvard Medical School. He completed medical school at the University of Pennsylvania and performed his PhD studying platelet biology. Dr. Schmaier completed Internal Medical residency at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and Cardiology and Vascular Medicine fellowships at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. He was recruited to join the faculty in Cardiovascular Medicine at BIDMC in 2020. Dr. Schmaier’s laboratory studies how vascular endothelial dysfunction predisposes to blood clotting, specifically how the cell membrane promotes thrombosis through regulation of negatively charged phospholipids. Work also investigates mechanisms of vascular dysfunction in COVID-19. Dr. Schmaier’s laboratory is funded by a K08 from NHLBI and a career development award from the American Heart Association.
